.... Talking of April showers, a pesky one has just ruined our drought.
0.2 mm of rain, not enough to do the garden any good at all, now already almost evaporated, just enough to tip the rain gauge (you could hear it balanced on the edge), but just enough bringing to an end 18 rainless days. This is the fourth longest drought in my records, and not that far short of the record 21 days in summer 1999. This rain wasn't forecast; indeed, none was forecast until Thursday. It's all very annoying. Trevor Harley Lundie, 10 miles NW Dundee http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/ |

You should have been down here in the south east of England last year to see what a drought is really like. Reservoirs dried up to only 25% of what they should be, continuous hosepipe ban for 18 months etc..... |

I doubt if the water companies use that criteria. Maybe with global warming, the definition will have to change soon. |

Still no rain here in Teignmouth since 30th March, so that's now 18
days and counting. http://www.dawlishweather.co.uk/holcombe_mar_07_sum.htm http://www.dawlishweather.co.uk/holcombe_apr_07_sum.htm |

Much as I love this weather I really wouldnt mind a bit of rain. (though 0.2mm is a rather annoying amount to break a drought) -- Sarah |

Have already got the hosepipe, water butts and watering cans primed for action. Sheila |

But it IS the formal definition; let's not use language to mean what we want it to mean. And I know most of the world lives in the southeast, but these sparsely populated wildernesses more than 50 miles awat from Surbiton do sometimes have interesting weather events - interesting, at least, to us. As I think I said, this is our longest drought since 2003. That makes it noteworthy. Me - I'm always amazed how people in the south think -2C is "extremely cold", and how a few flakes of snow brings civilisation to a halt. Trevor Harley Dundee |

Not that I care, soil tends to stay moist here and grass is still growing furiously. In fact its rather nice walking on hard ground, went out for a short cycle ride on Haytor tramway last weekend, very pleasant on firm ground. Will (Haytor, Devon, 1017 feet asl) -- |
