Default I can't see how "somewhere in the SE" is going to hit 31°C today....

If Aviemore is 29c, I would bet your bottom dollar that some remote Highland glen has already registered over 30c. Thats always been the problem with these remote areas, lots of spectacular weather happens there, which is invariably never recorded! Ive been stravaiging these glens for many years, and confirm that under synoptic conditions such as are prevailing now, some of these narrow sided glens trap the heat something awful!

30C was forecast for Lords today and possible 34 tomorrow!

A very much more pleasant 16 deg here at 1500z. Grey and overcast all
day with slight drizzle for much of the time.

I can hardly believe there can be such a difference over less than 200
miles at this time of year. In my sheltered Somerset back garden it is
28C with a dew point of 18C, and I am beginning to wilt.

Are you being serious??

Temperature differences of that order ocurr over far shorter distances
than that at this, or indeed any other time of year.

Really? Mid July inland UK with no sea breeze?

I would love you to show me an example.

Yes, I have a chart from the mid 80s with a temperature of 15C over Brest,
and 40C at Lyon, but that is France and a warm front was between the two,
with an easterly ahead of it and a southerly behind.

At 1600z today Altnahara had a temp of 26 deg while Wick, only 50 miles to the
east, had 14 deg. Aviemore had 28 deg while Aberdeen had 16.

I've seen 10C differences between the north & south coasts of Cornwall on a number of occasions, even in west Cornwall where the distance is 10miles.

Happens all the time when there is thick cloud cover in play. Can
easily be 18C when cloud spreads inland here from the North Sea and 28C
in West London.
Dave, S.Essex

No it does not. Not in mid July and in the middle of the afternoon.

Just look at the visible satellite picture.

Yes there is low cloud over the E coast, but how many years have you
seen the stratus spread so far inland in mid July in the middle of the
afternoon after two weeks of a dominant high pressure.

Look at Scotland and Northumberland. Even there the ST burns off within
a few miles of the coast.

I will not allow folk to try and hi-jack this thread unless they can
give me examples of mid-July, no sea breeze and after a long spell of
high pressure.

Your original comment made no mention of sea breezes or prolonged
high pressure.

I didn't realise there were conditions imposed upon the right to reply to you. I rather hoped you'd take my word for it, not imply I'd made it up. Norman has given some good exaples from today.

How exactly do you propose to do this? You have no authority over anyone
on this group.

It's strange we all probably get our forecast from the BBC but I'm

Are you sure that she was talking about today rather than about
tomorrow?
