I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here, but how do I refresh an
Avbrief radar animated image (short of rebooting the PC) in a browser like say IE6 or a tabbed one like Avant if it should make any difference? In other words if I download a given animation at time T, how do I download an updated version at say time T + 1 hour given that they both have the same file name? (The single images aren't a problem because they have unique file names - it's just the animations.) Or is this a defect in the current Avbrief implementation? JGD PS I guess I should add that the obvious ploy of using Refresh just dumps you (well me at least) back to the Radar Index page. |

Can't help I'm afraid - but are you having problems with the animations ?
Everytime I try and load one up it won't accept my password ? Mark. "John Dann" wrote in message ... Then click the link again for whatever amnimation you want. You don't need to worry about (or even know) what the filenames are. -- Dave |

I use Avant (and now MYIE2) and find a "refresh" has always worked with those animated .gifs. Failing that, the standard method is pressing the CTRL key at same time as the F1 key. That will force a refresh whereas CTRL and R will only refresh if the time stamp of the file has changed. There is a problem with some ISPs who use a cache server - say NTL. Mine doesn't, but if there is one you may be getting the old one again from that server. -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 26/01/2004 20:20:46 UTC |

I've also had problems with the password - get on to the customer service E
mail address on their website and John Culf will probably help you out as he did me. There is an on-going problem for some subscribers and they're trying to sort it out. Hmm, I guess it must be my setup (TM), which is a user a/c under Win2K
and IE6(.0.2800.1106IS) patched to date AFAIK. (I guess Avant just picks up the same IE6 engine details). This is what I see: 1. If I'm viewing a previously downloaded Avbrief radar aniGIF in IE6 then pressing F5 dumps me into the Avbrief home page. Navigating through into the radar index page again and clicking the same aniGIF link simply replays the previously downloaded aniGIF, ie doesn't trigger a refresh of the GIF. 2. Ditto Ctrl F5 or manually selecting Refresh as a menu option gives an identical behaviour. 3. Using back and reselecting the same link gives an identical result. So for whatever reason I can't force a re-fetch of an image file on my set-up, though it does work fine for forcing a refresh of HTML pages. (This rings a faint bell somewhere about image files not necessarily being easy to refresh in some IE configurations). But thanks anyway for the responses, which I interpret to mean that most other people can indeed get the obvious approach (ie effectively refreshing or reclicking the same link) to work in getting a more recent aniGIF downloaded. Sounds like I might need to ask on the IE ng to make some more progress. JGD |

Yes I did see that earlier on today, but bizarrely only for the animations not the single images. (Though maybe on reflection it's the animations that are more likely to be stolen and therefore now given more rigorous authentication). But as Chris says, this is an issue that can be resolved by Avbrief support and that particular problem is now fixed for me. JGD |

OK, problem solved. It seems that if the 'Check for newer versions of
stored pages' is set to automatic (which IIRC may be the default) in IE, it overrides any manual attempt to force an image refresh. Choosing 'Every visit to the page' rather than 'automatic' cures the problem. Many thanks for the helpful comments. JGD |
