Still got a bee in your bonnet about twitter syntax? I get
piles of new meteorological information, new scientific journal
articles from Twitter these days by carefully choosing who I
follow on there. There's a heck of a lot of climatologists and
meteorologists on it, and they share a LOT of useful
information - dare I say it - a heck of a lot more than I get
from Usenet these days. You should give it a try one day.

No don't like the stupid syntax. There is no need for it really.
Markup languages don't show their syntax, so why twitter? I get
all that I need elsewhere anyway without having to "follow"
somebody.

Have you gone downhill recently, or have you always been an arsehole
and I just hadn't noticed?

Shut up troll.

A comma might have been useful there, cretinous kook.

The syntax is for users' benefit. For instance, if I type '@will' I'll
get a list of contacts containing 'will'. If I wished to start a
conversation on a particular subject in which anyone can join, I can use
the hashtag to do so, e.g., #alternateusesforsnookertables.

The '@' character is used in e-mail addresses so why not in Twitter
addresses?

Because you don't always send out e-mail addresses in postings/articles but
they are all over the place in tweets. Also the use of various # tags really
does make it difficult to read. Surely the tags can be hidden somehow? It all
looks very clumsy and frankly old fashioned and amateurish.
