The winter fuel payment is automatic, or should be if you qualify:

* you were born on or before 5 July 1951 (winter 2012 to 2013 - this date
changes every year)
* you normally live in the UK throughout the week of 17 to 23 September
2012

https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment/eligibility

The Cold Weather Payment is triggered by "Payments will be made when your
local temperature is either recorded as, or forecast to be, an average of
zero degrees Celsius or below over 7 consecutive days."

https://www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment

Find out if your area has had "cold weather" he

http://pensions-service.direct.gov.u...ather-payment/

I see this area has had 3 qualifying periods so far this winter. That would
be £75 if I was eligable. Eligabilty seems a little complex but of people are
getting: Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) then it might be
worth having a little dig about.

Cold Weather Payment is not just "pensioners".

You'll be a State Pensioner before then and surely with a private pension the
pension age is what you decide, though this is normally set when you start
paying into it. My PP is geared for 60, which is also when I can get my hands
on my olde employers final salary pension as well.

Not that I qualify but, out of curiosity, I've just tapped my postcode into the pensions website and it tells me I'd have had 2 qualifying periods here. I'd have thought there would have been a greater disparity, but it must have been colder down here than I thought (or warmer with you, Dave) :-)

When I first read the definition I missed the word "average" so thought it
had to be seven consecuative ice days, highly unlikely. Even in this cold
snap we would have failed that test as it got, briefly, to over 1C yesterday,
the seventh ice day that wasn't quite...

But as it's average I can see that the last few of days of November and up to
the 14th ish of Decemeber could well average 0C, same for the period from
about the 9th January, so we may be due another Cold Weather Payment.

Hi, Dave,
Not sure which MetO station they use for your averages, Shap, Warcop?
We are covered by Ravensworth, North Yorkshire.

When I qualify, I'll take them and give the money to an age charity. It
seems a bit perverse giving me cold weather payments when I rarely feel
cold. E.g. Temperature in my study is +10.1C and I am comfortable with a
sweat shirt and thick fleece. I do understand that not everybody is the same
though, and it is so sad that poor old folk are having to make choices
between food on the table or fuel for heating. I just wish that we as a
nation could do more to help.

Hi, Will,
I don't think you'll qualify for cold weather payments anyway as you have to
be on benefits, pension credits etc.
I don't qualify but I do get the heating allowance which is good news for
swmbo as she is happiest above 20C, day and night.

that but it's certainly true here!
