I've been in the new place four weeks today - I think it may be a bit of a frost hollow here? The topography here results in the cold air draining away to the north during the night. I suspect the resulting turbulence and mixing results in the nocturnal temperature fall coming to a halt or going though several cycles which reduces the overall drop in temperature. I have been tempted to locate a temperature sensor some 200 yards north of here where there is a steep sided valley facing north. Could be some impressively low temperatures there. The actual figure I recorded is secondary to the time elapsed since an even lower figure was recorded here - 25 years is a long time. Mind you the location here at 350' (positively Alpine for Essex) reduces day time maxima and no doubt contributes to the 3 ice days recorded so far this month. Complete snow cover persists at 9cm following the heavy snowfall last weekend and recent top up. Snow clearing skills improving although my sack of rock salt, purchased in the early 1980's is almost empty -- George in Epping www.eppingweather.co.uk www.winter1947.co.uk |

To me now, at this time of year after a recent 'stratwarm' event the odds are more in favour of the northerly persisting. But please don't shoot me down in flames or "judge me" if it doesn't, these are just my thoughts FWIW. Will ----------------------------- We'll start worrying when you stop having thoughts! Dave |
