-9.1C in Wanstead - not often I'm lower than you, George. I've been in
the new place four weeks today - I think it may be a bit of a frost
hollow here?

LOL

It's great stuff isn't it?
Amazing conditions at present in the home counties, takes me back years!
Meanwhile Altnaharra (that favourite cold spot loved by the tabloids)
continues to bask in mild.

indeed, and this cold spell continues to exceed expectations in my
area. It was the seventh day in a row that I recorded full cover of
snow (5cm) - which hasn't happened for years, certainly since I
started recording seriously in 1996. What's your latest take on this
possible northerly toward the end of next week, Will?

Yes, Scotland & Northern Ireland seem to have been barely
affected by this cold spell.
Temperatures approaching -15C are pretty rare in open country,
outside of the 'usual suspect' frost hollow locations.
For once the screaming '-15 degrees!' Daily Mail type headlines
are about right.

Mine was -9.0C. My lowest since recording and I guess also for 25 years!

=========================================

Certainly looks an interesting one still Scott. Big question, as always, is
how long it will last?
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that some recent and ongoing research
in the Met Office regarding stratosphere/troposhere links would indicate
that sudden 'stratwarms' are, *in part* caused by the Siberian high (Rossby
wave breaking), but once 'stratwarm' has occurred then favoured area for
blocking transfers to mid-Atlantic a few weeks later. Read into that what
you wish. To me now, at this time of year after a recent 'stratwarm' event
the odds are more in favour of the northerly persisting. But please don't
shoot me down in flames or "judge me" if it doesn't, these are just my
thoughts FWIW.

Indeed, just 20 miles south of Altnaharra and the mild, springlike weather
continues. After one of the foulest Januarys on record, it's great to be
able to get out in the garden every day. Temp. last night was around +6C.
with daytime temps. around +9C. Overcast with a little drizzle today but sun
forecast for tomorrow and still no wind.
