I had no idea he had been ill, battling with cancer. I enjoyed his regular posts to this newsgroup, and as everybody has said already, he will be sorely missed. _____________________ Nick Otter Valley, Devon 83 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk I remember when Mike went through the tragedy of his first wife being killed in a car crash, Eventually after some time he found some happiness with a new partner then cancer came along. Was it last year when he posted those photos of the hill climb he managed on the west coast of Ireland. Have I got that right? You have indeed Lawrence, it was in September last year and he was really chuffed to have made that climb. The thing that comes through with all the posts of condolences is just how knowledgeable Mike was but with no hint whatsoever of ego or superiority, why he even spoke to me and always in a nice patient way. Of course there are others on the group who are like Mike and I always feared one day that as time passed by we would learn of the passing of someone who in a way we got to know. Sad fact of life but this NG was all the richer for someone like Mike. I have to say its affected me more than I thought and I suspect most here are saddened tonight. He had many friends both online and offline and always enjoyed sharing what knowledge he had, as you say, with great patience, ever the teacher. There will be sadness but also many fond memories. Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments. I will collate them and ensure they are passed on to his wife, Liz and the family, who will I know, be stunned by the response, I don't think they really have any idea just how widely known and respected Mike was. -- ~~Linda~~ Hello Linda There's not much that can take away the pain at times like these but the feelings expressed here are some small comfort that will last into the times ahead, as to just how liked and respected Mike was. I'll say no more now but I think you can see just how upset people genuinely are. |

I remember how delighted he was when I found his web site http://www.mtullett.plus.com/ and told him that my first grand daughter had been born within months of his first grandchild, also a girl. I was missing his absence from this newsgroup, even before this sad news arrived. Alastair McDonald. |

I just looked at a few of the posts from the past. He got one or two interesting discussions going. A pet on here is Piers Corbyn. Mr Tullet got a thread going on the forecast for the end of 2007. The planet went through a nasty spell according to this search: http://www.google.co.uk/search?clien...utf-8&oe=utf-8 Mr Corbyn was focused on one small part of it. The whole group missed the obvious conclusion but at least Mike drew attention to the situation. Nice one. |

Jon O'Rourke sent me a photo last night of him standing with a cheeky grin next to a new car he'd bought to enjoy his retirement last year - what a crying shame he didn't get the time to spend it whizzing around the hills and dales with his new wife. I was hoping to visit this year once settled in Dublin. I'm sure the news took the edge off the day yesterday for many on here. Richard |

He always displayed goodwill towards others and one sensed in him a modesty that is the sign of real knowledge and expertise. Many of us suffered with him when his first wife died tragically a few years ago. We shared his happiness when he remarried some time afterwards. We may remember the courage, dignity and humour he showed when telling us of his illness just a few months ago. I feel it has been a privilege to make his acquaintance, even if only in cyberspace. Sincere sympathy to Mike's family and friends. Colin Youngs Brussels |

That is really sad news. I only knew Mike through this newsgroup too,
and really appreciated his input and advice. USW has lost a key contributor, who will be missed by many on here. My condolences to his family. Phil Layton Guildford |

I am just shocked to hear this news!
Mike was an absolute gentleman. He faced many challenges from personal loss and illness. I am genuinely devastated and my condolences to his family. Joe "Phil Layton" wrote in message ... I have only just seen this and can only echo the good things everyone else
has said. He was the most helpful, kind and consistent to all on the group and epitomised what it is all about. His writings on the winter of 1963 are the best and I will always look back at them and think of Mike. The way he conducted himself is something we should all aspire to. So sorry. Dave |

wrote: I am so very sad to tell you that Mike died on Tuesday. As some of you may know he had lung cancer and although he had one lung removed, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy last year, another tumour had developed fairly recently. This had caused swallowing and breathing problems and a week or so ago, he had a stent put in his throat to ease the pressure and help his breathing. Sadly, after this he developed pneumonia and it proved too much for him. He died on Tuesday, his family all with him at the time.. The funeral is tomorrow and he will be buried with his first wife Wendy. I have today spoken with both Liz, his wife and his son Jamie and they asked that I let you all know. I am not usually subscribed to this group these days but will pass on any messages to the family from here or if anyone wishes to email me. * * * Sad news, I'm really sorry to hear that. Mike and I had our differences on the newsgroup but something like this completely transcends anything like that. I'm glad the family were close at the end. |
