Poor Mike.

I had no idea he had been ill, battling with cancer.

I enjoyed his regular posts to this newsgroup, and as everybody has said
already, he will be sorely missed.

I remember when Mike went through the tragedy of his first wife being
killed
in a car crash, Eventually after some time he found some happiness with a
new partner then cancer came along. Was it last year when he posted those
photos of the hill climb he managed on the west coast of Ireland. Have I
got
that right?

You have indeed Lawrence, it was in September last year and he was really
chuffed to have made that climb.

The thing that comes through with all the posts of condolences is just
how
knowledgeable Mike was but with no hint whatsoever of ego or superiority,
why he even spoke to me and always in a nice patient way.
Of course there are others on the group who are like Mike and I always
feared one day that as time passed by we would learn of the passing of
someone who in a way we got to know. Sad fact of life but this NG was all
the richer for someone like Mike. I have to say its affected me more than
I
thought and I suspect most here are saddened tonight.

He had many friends both online and offline and always enjoyed sharing
what
knowledge he had, as you say, with great patience, ever the teacher. There
will be sadness but also many fond memories.

Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments. I will collate them and ensure
they are passed on to his wife, Liz and the family, who will I know, be
stunned by the response, I don't think they really have any idea just how
widely known and respected Mike was.

Hello Linda

There's not much that can take away the pain at times like these but the
feelings expressed here are some small comfort that will last into the
times ahead, as to just how liked and respected Mike was. I'll say no more
now but I think you can see just how upset people genuinely are.
