writes What else can I do, I use met office sheathed min & max thermometers housed in a stephenson screen, also there are electronic thermometers (which agree with the sheathed thermometers), and the screen is placed away from any buildings or structures. I was thinking of redesigning the screen to incorporate a solar-powered fan but this would make the screen non-standard to the approved design. Just out of interest, how big is your Stevenson screen? I once used small screens for micro-climatic studies on the school site, and found that they over read maximum temperatures. The problem may well have been the lack of wind in your garden - if it is so sheltered that you get no wind on a day like Wednesday, then this may have an effect - in Coventry we had an 18mph gust at 1536hr, for example and a steady force 3 on a 10m mast in the afternoon. It certainly felt cool in the shade in Bromsgrove by 1630hr when I visited my parents' home - my father's thermometer read 10C by then!
