What else can I do, I use met office sheathed min & max thermometers housed
in a stephenson screen, also there are electronic thermometers (which agree
with the sheathed thermometers), and the screen is placed away from any
buildings or structures. I was thinking of redesigning the screen to
incorporate a solar-powered fan but this would make the screen non-standard
to the approved design.

Just out of interest, how big is your Stevenson screen?

I once used small screens for micro-climatic studies on the school site,
and found that they over read maximum temperatures.

The problem may well have been the lack of wind in your garden - if it
is so sheltered that you get no wind on a day like Wednesday, then this
may have an effect - in Coventry we had an 18mph gust at 1536hr, for
example and a steady force 3 on a 10m mast in the afternoon. It
certainly felt cool in the shade in Bromsgrove by 1630hr when I visited
my parents' home - my father's thermometer read 10C by then!

Any more Midland readings?

Exactly! It was very warm in my garden yesterday, with hardly a breath of
wind and the anemometer showed frequent calms; under such conditions with
strong sunshine it is bound to 'cook'.

This has always been a constant problem, and certain parts of Worcester are
very sheltered (including where I live). I asked Philip Eden about this and
he said that Worcester is a known hot-spot. I feel I am always living under
constant scrutiny because of the infamous Damari curse.

Anyway, I am packing my bags at the end of the month and heading down to the
more tempered climes of south-Devon, so I will leave the Worcester 'curse'
behind.

I believe that my Stephenson screen is the standard 'approved' size though I
don't know for sure and it is quite old (but clean!). Had it for along time.

The Damari curse?

I live near Worcester and have't heard of anyone or anything called Damari...

Not at all, there is no such stigma!

I'm just interested to compare data in the Midlands, and let's be
honest, there is a very poor coverage of weather stations here, and even
you are moving away!!

Best of luck with your move; look forward to hearing reports from Devon.

cheers

That whole area up the Severn valley from Cheltenham-Worcester
seems to be a 'hot-spot'. Since my parents moved to Malvern I
have noticed that it seems to be the warmest in the country on more
occasions than one might expect.
