Default Sheffield Rain Shadow

Although the fronts that push south overnight were quite active it
remained dry over sheffield execpt for a little drizzle which didn't
even wet the ground. The radar shows quite well the rain shadow
created by the Peaks and Pennines. By 7:30 am the cloud was breaking
and by 8:00 am the sun was bright. The hills above sheffield could be
clearly seen still covered in ice and snow. Driving towards Rotherham
into a very dark looking clould a vivid rainbow appeared. Daff and
crocus in full flower covered the grassed boarers along the road. Nice
way to start a friday.

I'm travelling from Manchester to Nottingham later this afternoon, via
Sheffield. I'm hoping to see another definate snow line in the peaks, last
weekend it was around 600ft, I think it will be somewhat higher today,
closer to 1200-1500ft.

Yes the rain shadow was quite noticeable on the radar, we don't get a
drop either (Knaresborough).
There was a real classic, I think early Jan, of a very heavy front
coming down from the NW. There was a clear N-S break, maybe 20-30 miles
wide, right down the whole length of the east side of the Pennines which
stayed dry, yet the Pennines, North York Moors, Wolds, E Yorks, Lincs
etc on both sides all got a lots of rain. It was really quite remarkable
on the radar.

I noticed this quite a few times living in Penistone, but hadn't seen it for
a while.
Still, that meant we benefitted with some more snow, before it turned to
rain. 4.3mm rain recorded.
