Default Omega Block?

A few days back I believe it was Will and some other Met Office boys
referred to an Omega Block, a term I hadn't come across before. I looked at
the charts for next week and lo and behold there seemed to be a finger of HP
from the Azores creating a block in the Atlantic to our west which formed a
huge omega shape. I guess this was it. Now the charts have changed somewhat
but there seems to be a similar feature coming down from the Greenland HP
but the other way up. This wouldn't be an inverted Omega Block would it?!
And is it also likely to be difficult to shift?

Dave

Hi Dave, the term "omega" block is as you rightly say concerned with the shape
of the pattern. It is usually the pattern at 500mb which is referred to. You can
get "inverted" omegas on the sea level pressure chart if the 500 mb lows migrate
northwards instead of anchoring near the bottom of the omega shape. They too are
difficult to shift and difficult to forecast shifting as well ! Hope that's
clear.

Will.

Cheers Will,
another thirty years and we'll have this forecasting lark cracked on here!
