uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

What sort of daytime maximum temperatures are we looking at if we have sub 510 air in East Anglia and the Midlands? -- Gavin Staples. Hi Gavin, A lot of other factors must be taken into consideration, but I'll let the more learned explain those. However, there are some interesting 12z soundings to use as examples from today. At Kolpasevo, Siberia (29231) the thickness was measured at 520dm, but with a surface temperature of MS21.5 deg C. At Rostov (34731), Russian Federation, the thickness was 531dm with a surface temperature of 0.2 deg C. I assume you are talking about the solution the 06z DT GFS model has given for later next week. The NE wind is likely to be bring in air which is very unstable to sea temperatures. With a thickness around 516dm, in this situation, I would think it difficult to find temperatures above freezing point, away from coasts. HTH, Joe |

.... as noted elsewhere, the 500-1000 hPa thickness values are poor
indicators of surface temperatu they are useful tracers of the bulk movement of air but for refined surface forecasting, use 850-1000hPa partial thicknesses, or regression from ThetaW/ThetaE or adjustment of the 850hPa actual temperature. Even these need to be used with extreme care under conditions of a marked low-level inversion, where cold under-cutting is taking places as the 850hPa level (circa 1500m asl) may not be truly representative of the near-surface conditions. Back in 1958, Boyden published in Met.Mag an analysis of *mean* screen temperature for various 500-1000hPa values: the mean was of the 09Z minimum and 21Z maximum. Using the (rather small) graph in the old Forecasters' Reference Book gives: 528 dam: +1degC 522 dam: 0 degC 516 dam: -2 degC 510 dam: -4 degC. I haven't got access to the original article, but I imagine some comment was made regarding snow cover. Martin. |

Hi Gavin,
As you probably know it depends on time of year/cloud amount/precipitation/fetch/snow-cover, previous night's min etc. However, at this time of year, given no snow-cover, clear skies in a northerly, I would suggest it struggles to get above freezing inland. Given snow-cover, cloud-cover and snowfall in a northerly, then a few degrees below. Cheers John Hammond "Gavin Staples" wrote in message ... Here's a question for anyone.
