It's much more unbalanced this time though with the record low for time of the year in the Arctic. The Laptev Sea region has not yet started freezing at the latest recorded date with the overall ice extent way below anything for this date in the record since 1979. I can't see this changing in the near future. Interesting but very concerning.

Meanwhile, the Antarctic is still running slightly above the 30 year mean.

Arctic here. I'm sure this will revert to something more 'usua'l in the next month, as freezing really gets going. http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

The danger is that it may not revert to 'usual'. If it does not, and we have a new low maximum that could be followed by a new low minimum in 2021, and yet lower maximum and minimum in 2022.
See https://ads.nipr.ac.jp/vishop/#/extent for current Arctic, Antarctic and Global sea ice extents.

Via Charctic data , just 3,000 sq km shy of the record for this day,
compared to the previous minimum 25 Oct 2016
