[WR] Ystrad, Rhondda - 1 Mar 2018
Currently gusting to around 40 knots in moderate snow. Blowing all over the place so difficult to estimate depth - probably about 3cm with 10cm drifts.. Visibility around 200 metres. Temperature currently -3.3, but has been -4 most of the day. Mainly light snow today, started around 0600z, but became moderate around dusk. Blowing a hoolie all day, very unpleasant outside.
Yesterday (moving day) in Hyssington started with a temperature of -8 and light snow showers. Some moderate showers late afternoon and into the evening. I didn't see the temperature go above -5 before I uprooted my weather station around 1430z. The late afternoon snow showers meant my anemometer couldn't be uninstalled from the roof! It is still up there now. Fortunately I am still able to rescue it at the weekend. Driving down to Ystrad during the evening was interesting. Snow-covered roads for the first 10 miles, then generally very good road conditions thanks to the wind, the nature of the snow and the treatment teams. However it wasn't all plain sailing, as the wind was very strong and made the van's handling challenging. Temperatures were a very consistent -6 to -7, dipping to -9 as I traversed the Brecon Beacons via the A470. Warmer in the Rhondda at around -5. Up at 0530 today to take the van back, but because of the red warning and the subsequent cancellation of Manchester-Cardiff trains I had to cancel and keep the van another day. So another early start tomorrow, providing road conditions are okay!
