I remarked yesterday that I was surprised at the lack of ice on the larger lakes here, after more than a week of sub zero temperatures between -4 and -12c. I guessed that this was due to the strong breeze gusting to 40 kph.
Our biggest local lake, 2 miles South, is Lac de Viam and was ice free at 1700 yesterday, but rock solid this afternoon. It's a couple of miles long and 189 ha and I can only put the sudden freeze down to a reduction in the breeze overnight, but I guess the -14c helped. Still, it was quite a shock after yesterday. This should just about be the end of the cold spell here, temperatures are due to rise overnight, but more so tomorrow, though we do have a snow cover and light snow falling still. DM. 740m.
