After a dry July (stats later) with a fairly consistent surfable swell (unusually consistent for July), today is wet with no swell. 2' out at Sevenstones at times, the smallest it's been for 6 weeks or so. (Though it will soon pick up)
All a bit sad, as if you're a surfer a bit of rain clears a space on the beach. Decapitating young children is frowned upon. Just steady rain since 09:00, easing a bit at times, never particularly heavy. One interesting stat for July, that despite it being fairly zonal, the strongest gust I recorded in Penzance (24mph) is a new record low for July, demonstrating the complete lack of properly windy conditions. That's likely to be beaten today. The other is how warm the sea's been off Cornwall. Still warmer than much of the Portugese coast. Not that unusual, but particularly marked his year. The open sea SST's been close to 18C much of the month, considerably warmer over the beaches at times. http://old.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Reursst.gif. The cool pool is now quite small http://polar.ncep.noaa.gov/sst/rtg_l...maly_oper0.png It will be interesting to see how the stirring and quite big sea, which will build in association with the slow moving depression, affects the pattern over the next 3 or 4 days. It will give an indication of how thick the warm surface layer has become. The swell from it (the depression, not the warm surface layer) arrives in Cornwall tomorrow, and looks set to keep the lifeguards on their toes. Combined with a brisk onshore wind, a good recipes for Rips. http://magicseaweed.com/Sennen-Surf-Report/4/ Graham Penzance A memory today http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/Marazion.html |

![]() Just steady rain since 09:00, easing a bit at times, never particularly heavy. Rather heavy rain since I made that post. In fact the total, 22.5mm is steadily approaching the total for the whole of July. Already the wettest day since 19th June 2016, (27.8mm) and may well end up the wettest 09:00-09:00 period since 23rd July 2015 (41.9mm) Well we needed the rain, but it can stop now! Graham Penzance |
