Here at 57N the hottest days of the year, averaged over the period
1990-2012, are the first four days of August, daily average about 15, average max about 20 and the average min about 11, if anyone would like to compare. Ian Bingham, Inchmarlo, Aberdeenshire. 80m asl. |

Well here at nearly the other end of Great Britain at 50N it is not that dissimilar. Warmest temperature occurs during the first week of August with maximum of 21.0C and a minimum of 13.0C giving a mean of 17.0C. These are 1981 - 2010 figures for Sidmouth. My own data from 2005 to 2012 from two separate but climatologically similar sites in the Otter Valley give a maximum of 21.5C and a minimum of 12.7C giving a mean of 17.1C and occurring about a week earlier at the end of July. -- Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

Only about 2 degrees in it then. Perhaps in the SW Peninsular the prevailing winds off the Atlantic take the edge off the temperatures, whereas we, being in the lee of the Highlands, tend to get more or less of a Foehn effect. And the coldest time of year (1981 - 2010) statistically is the first week of February with a daily maximum of 8.9C and a minimum of 2.8C (mean = 5.9C) . My own readings (2005 to 2012) show the coldest week to be the last week of January with a daily maximum of 9.1C and a minimum of 3.1C (mean = 6.1C). So all nice and symmetrical at the other side of the year. -- Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |
