uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Davis Weather Monitor II - Wireless?

I've had the Davis Weather Monitor II (connected to an anemometer and
external temp sensor) for, at a guess, 6 years.

I'm just about to move house and have spent ages removing the cabling,
etc.

This got me thinking - is it possible to hook up this system to any
kind of wireless modules so I can do away with the cabling at my next
property, or to do that would I need to buy a whole new weather
station like the Vantage Pro?

I think the simple answer unfortunately is no. The main problem is
that the WMII data signals are analogue all the way to the console and
so there's no digital data stream that might more easily be carried
over a simple inexpensive wireless link. There was (is? - most of
these WMII wireless parts have been discontinued) a Davis package
called Sensorlink, which effectively did do an A/D conversion at the
sensors end with a corresponding D/A conversion at the console end.
But AFAIK this was only ever produced in a US-legal wireless frequency
(916MHz IIRC), which isn't legal in Europe and so this package has
never (legally) been available here in the UK.

The only easy solution I can suggest is to remember that the junction
box to console cable can be extended just as easily as the cables from
individual sensors to the junction box. So if you mounted the junction
box outside in a sheltered position (but preferably using the
Protected Junction Box with its extra weather -proofing) , you would
have just one cable, albeit a slightly wider one, to bring indoors.

There are other wireless solutions but none is very cost-effective.
You could mount the WMII console outside in a suitable shelter and use
the wireless Consolelink option and a suitable DavisTalk-compatible
receiver, but this would be quite cumbersome and expensive.

Or, if you have the WMII connected to a PC, it might be more practical
to think in tems of a wireless RS232/serial link, ie with the WMII and
data logger outside in a shelter and to use either radio modems or a
WiFi network link to bring the data stream indoors. But again the cost
of doing this probably wouldn't end up much short of a VP station and
there are practical issues like providing power to the outside console
etc.

Thanks very much for the concise response John. I think I need to have
a ponder.
