Moderate snow continues to fall from showers streaming off the North
Sea, forming underneath this sub-516dm cold pool. On my second floor balcony we have around 14-16cm (a refined measurement will follow in due course once I am appropriately dressed). First signs on the radar of the frontogenesis occurring over northern France which is due to deliver more prolonged, heavy snow later today. This warm front will introduce higher theta-w air and the snow is likely to turn to rain later this evening at lower levels. However the difficulty remains as to how cold the lying snow will keep the boundary layer. An awful mixture for the forecasters to handle. Joe -- Hampstead, London (81m asl) |

Joe - that confirms the northward shift of the main band overnight, I'd imagine. I'm guess just shy of your numbers here, although like you I'll take a slide rule up on to Blackheath later this morning for official measurements ! Richard |

Richard I have just driven to St Albans along the M1. Minor roads are tricky to navigate but the motorway had been cleared, admittedly only two lanes of it. Quite a stark contrast in snow amounts - there is probably about half of what we have here only about three miles to our north. Alan Gardiner - any reports from your area? ......and yes driving was essential - the other half is a pharmacist. Joe -- Hampstead, London (81m asl) |
