While you bunch of statistical loons babble ever on in your smug newsgroup
about how cold you'd love it to get Macmillan Cancer Support is calling on
the government to extend the winter fuel payments to those with cancer.
Chief executive Ciaran Devane said: "Cancer patients of all ages continue to
suffer needlessly because of this dreadfully cold weather. Note he:::
"dreadfully cold weather" (I haven't seen many remark on THAT aspect - I
have to do it for you) but you lot of imbeciles with weather experience
skills in the wrong place don't see it that way.

Far from being dreadful I found my walk today out in the cold, crisp
winter sunshine to be most invigorating. I defy anyone to disagree...

It'll also help get rid of bugs, virus's and aphids which plague us in
the summer playing havoc on the harvests. Like many things, there is
always two sides to the coin.

In the past day or two I heard somebody being interviewed on Radio
Scotland about this.
Said that the timing of the cold snap was particularly unfortunate
(like it's mid-winter!)

It wasn't much fun for me this morning: first making attempts to de-ice the
car in the dark; then driving on roads with lethal patches of ice, then
arriving at destination to find the autosampler frozen (despite being
covered) and a week's important environmental pollution study down the drain
(literally), and then again having to de-ice the car as the windows had
frozen up again. By now hands completely numb and unable to drive/turn on
lights/use indicators and the crappy French car's heater (company car, not
my choice) was completely useless and could only emit slight warmth after 30
minutes (thermostat changed recently and made no difference).

Definitely not my idea of fun and this cold is turning into a right pain in
the rear, though the sunshine was nice this afternoon.

There was a very good piece by Christopher Howse in the DT today putting
the case for cold winter weather:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/c...t-it-snow.html

When I read this bit I thought of Will:

"Ideally we should return home with wood to chop to stir the blood and
to add to the log-pile. The tragedy of too many new houses is an absence
of any fireplaces. A real fire is quite as interesting as television and
far more comforting during those power cuts, which may be expected soon
enough."

It's beautiful isn't it!
Ate my curry and chips on a bench in the sun today in Exeter and it felt
warm, but with frost on the ground.

I was out this afternoon doing some bird atlas survey work and I found I
had to take my gloves off as my hands were getting overheated which was
slightly surprising. Still quite a bit of snow in areas shaded from the sun
and even in the woods the ground was frozen hard. a very pleasant afternoon
excursion.

I won't disagree that you felt invigorated (how could I?) but
personally I prefer walking easily rather than tensed and hunched.
Warmth puts smile on peoples faces, relaxes them and is overall a good
thing. Well, up to a wet-bulb temperature of about 20°C it is.
