Here is a link to a graph showing the UV index for today (8th) and
yesterday for Camborne in Cornwall, note the peak at around 1pm - 2pm.

http://www.btinternet.com/~nickgardn...ex08062008.jpg

Something's dodgy there!

http://www.nrpbdev.org.uk/uv/uv_inde...ation=Camborne

is the URL to the "live" version. Note how the index reached 9 yesterday and
again today, yet the Met Office website says:

"The solar index does not exceed 8 in the UK (8 is rare; 7 may occur on
exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks around the summer solstice).
Indices of 9 and 10 are common in the Mediterranean area."

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...de/key.html#uv

One of those is definitely wrong, unless Camborne has moved outside the
UK...

I agree. The latest graph shows the UV Index reaching 10 at Camborne.
Compare this to the Chiltons where it is showing 6.5.

Experience of looking at this has shown in the past that Camborne is usually
about 1 Index higher than Chilton. Recently though, these surprisingly high
levels have been recorded at Camborne which does seem to indicate that
something is amiss.

I have never seen a UV Index of 9 before in the UK. Levels of 8 are
reasonably common at this time of year at Camborne, (rare at Chilton or
anywhere else in the UK), but an index of 10!!! Hmmmm.

Well I don't know whether the Camborne reading is right or not but, as
Liscombe keeps getting shown on CEEFAX as in Cornwall, perhaps
Camborne has moved on some exchange programme.

I do know that a UV index of 9 has been reached in previously at
Camborne. As the air is still very clean, and it's almost the longest
day, and the synoptic setup is right for a high UV index (see Martin's
earlier posting on the subject) I'm not unduly surprised . I read
somewhere that a UV reading of 10 has occured in Cornwall. On Scilly
the local radio station gives the daily UV forecasts for the Islands,
and one day when I was there in mid May the forecast was 8.

Apparently Cornwall has got the rest of the UK beaten hands down when
it comes to skin cancer (seriously). Yet another good reasona for
always wearing a wetsuit.

I see that the VP2 AWS on the weatherlink.com network at St Martins on
Scilly was reporting a max of 9.9 at 2pm today. (See:

http://www.weatherlink.com/user/tape...mary&headers=1

The accuracy on the UV sensor is quoted as ±5%, so it could be
overestimating to some extent but the reading would seem to be at
least 9.

That's interesting & seems to back up Camborne.

Well, if the Camborne UV sun index figure of 10+ is true then that must be
pretty exceptional and something you don't normally find at this latitude in
the northern hemisphere.

Certainly pretty exceptional - but as virtually always with
exceptionally high readings - nearby sea mist.

It's been cloudless here since the dispersal of low cloud around
08:00. Max of 22.6C - significantly higher than the last 2 days, which
saw 19.5C & 19.6C respectively. Wind stayed offshore, but became very
light.
