I've just read Mr *******i's blog on his thoughts on the coming
winter. He suggests that the La Nina episode could be "top 5" with suggestions of a strong polar jet - the suggestion being that we could be in for a colder than normal winter in Europe. Quick research, however, has uncovered that while a strong La Nina episode can be followed by a very cold winter - it is by no means guaranteed. A case in point being 1988 / 89 which was one of the mildest winters I can remember. Conversely the winter of 1946/47 was preceeded by a STRONG EL NINO while 1962/63 was preceeded by a year when there was neither an El Nino or La Nina. I wonder if some of the more learned members of this group can enlighten me further on this... I aquired my figures from this site: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/enso/ensodef.html |
