The period 11th June to 10th July probably marked the peak
(or perhaps 'trough' would under the circumstances be a better word) of this summer's cyclonic episode as measured by running 30-day means of the circulation indices. The mean sea-level chart for the period shows a low centre near Helsinki at 1003mbar, with a sharp elongated trough extending WSW across the Skagerrak, and from Northumberland to Shannon, thence out into mid-Atlantic. The mean flow north of the trough was NEly, while to the south of the trough it was WSWly. The mean pressure at 55N 05W (central to the British Isles lat/long block) was 1005.6 mbar. The lowest for that point in 135 years of records was 1009.0mbar in June (1991) and 1007.3mbar in July (1988). although lower values may have occurred for 30-day periods straddling the two months. England and Wales rainfall for the 30-day period was 176mm (more than the June record, but just short of the July record, set in 1828) and amounts to 273% of the norm. England and Wales sunshine for the period was 120h (61%, and probably in the lowest five-percentile) while the CET of 15.0°C was 0.1 degC above the 1971-2000 norm. Philip |
