A couple of weeks or so ago, there was a thread concerning the painting of
stands for Stevenson screens. I have just come across an old met office pamphlet entitled 'Instructions for making thermometer screens of the Stevenson type', HMSO, Revised in the Meteorological Office, 1937. In this it is stated that wooden stands should be creosoted for the lowest 21 inches of the legs, and the rest painted white. Metal stands should be made of galvanised mild steel. There is no mention of painting these. If anyone would like a copy of the pamphlet, please e-mail me, and I will make a pdf copy. Hope this is of some help. -- Bernard Burton Wokingham, Berkshire, UK. Satellite images at: www.woksat.info/wwp.html or www.btinternet.com/~wokingham.weather/wwp.html |

Metal stand at Solent MRSC seems to conform to this specification, it is not painted white and seems to be just galvanised steel. -- Dave |

What do you do then - especially if like mine it is well and truly embedded in concrete a foot or so below the turf? I've just taken the opportunity of a beautiful day here on Fair Isle to give my screen stand its annual chipping, wire brushing and two coasts of grey Hammerite. In 33 years I've got through three screens . . . but its still the same stand! Dave Fair Isle |
