Default Rescue off Land's iEnd in Gales

This mornings severe gales off west Cornwall have resulted in a Ferry en
route from Rosslare to Cherbourg getting into trouble near Wolf Rock off
Land's End. Currently gusting 50 knots in the area, sea not huge but swell
still 10-15 feet. (It not infrequently exceeds 20 feet in winter in that
area).

Sennen Lifeboat was launched and 2 tugs sent to the scene. I've just seen
the Sennen lifeboat come into Newlyn, not sure why, probably because it's
too rough to get back into Sennen.

The wind is just in the direction where it funnels around Land's End, so
conditions have been quite severe here this morning, easing slightly now
Here in Penzance gusting 50 rather than 55mph, but far stronger in exposed
spots.

Graham

From RTE news:
http://www.rte.ie/news/2005/0213/ferry.html

"A passenger ferry on its way from Rosslare to Cherbourg drifted for more
than four hours off the southeast
coast of England this morning after one of its engines broke down."

It certainly must have drifted a long way!

(or do the Irish use different cardinal points from the rest of us?)

Or it could be that that's the white cliffs of Dover I can see from Land's
End, not Scilly.
