Pah, it's all a bit of fun. I've yet to see anyone claiming this'll lead to
six foot of snow for Little Piddlington or the like either; there seems to
be a shocked air of disbelief, of dreams about to come true, of great
anticipation...

A bit like the run up to Christmas when I was a youngster in fact!

Little Piddlington !!!! That's fantastic as it's just down the road from me
.... I'll just go clear out the village shop before warning the neighbours.

I used to work at the Met Office at RAF Little Piddlington (well,
Little Rissington, actually) and 6 ft of snow was not uncommon there
in my day, as it was at 750ft, with no comparable high ground to the
east until you reached the Urals (no double entendre intended!).

Bit like Cromer having a sea fetch from Wrankel Island (to the N of
Siberia) in a northerly!

The hill behind me (S), Crown Hill, Langdon Hills (395 ft) is said to be the
highest point in a straight line between itself and the North Pole. I've
tried it on the map and believe it or not it's probably true!

Looking at the 1:500000 air map. Gives a height of 387'for Crown Hill and
projecting due north the only bit in the way might be a small area at 400'
just SE of Newmarket. Close though.
I recall that in the 1950's and 60's the booking hall at Oakwood Station,
North London, had a plaque with the words that, at 279' (85m) this was the
highest point in a straight line between itself and the Urals. Not totally
convinced but it certainly felt like it in an easterly wind.

All the best

That's my Sunday afternoon cycling patch. My half-million shows 400'
at Wratting Common, and 419' at Credburgh, but on the ground it's
all pretty much level at that height, known as the Suffolk plateau, not
just "a small area". So looking north from anywhere between central
London and the Straits of Dover you can reckon that there's a 400' ridge
between you and the North Pole.

Hey! I live very close to the Piddle. Six foot of snow down there in
Piddlehinton could mean I might get trapped in the Brace of Pheasants
and miss the in-laws. Yessss!
Don't you mean testosterone?
