Well, the page does include the disclaimer: "The data on this page is
produced automatically from the original observational reports and has
not been quality controlled. Therefore, it may display errors contained
in the original reports."

But even so, you would think that they could insert some automated
quality control that would catch observations so obviously wrong as that
one.

They obviously don't have any quality control at the Met Office!

I just updated my website with todays "Res 40 Limited" locations and
immediately removed the 46.6°c from the Scilly Isle.
