I've noticed that people refer to altocumulus castellanus.
My 1952 edition of the 'Observers Handbook' calls it altocumulus castellatus. Which, please, is correct? -- Alan White Twenty-eight miles NW of Glasgow, overlooking Loch Goil and Loch Long in Argyll, Scotland. I prefer catellatus: have never been comfortable with the 'official' name, as a castellated appearance to the cloud is what we are describing. And a few years ago, Professor Scorer (in a letter in 'Weather') also weighed in with his preference for castellatus - that's good enough for me! (BUT, officially - i.e. WMO-wise, it is castellanus). I too prefer castellatus. It was what I was brought up on and it sounds better! -- I have to say that I have got used to 'castellanus' now. But I do remember a fairly extended exchange on the Letters pages of 'Weather' when the official version was enforced, and I remember thinking at the time that 'castellanus' sounds as though it ought to refer to the keeper of a castle. (We should probably call him/her the Estate Manager these days). Who remembers the Castellan on Gallifrey in several Dr Who stories of the time? My Latin is very limited so I'm not in a position to discuss the lexical difference between 'castellanus' and 'castellatus', but I know a man who can. Colin, over to you. Philip Eden |
