What about October 1985, Philip? Or was that just locally in the Midlands? -- Steve, it was Oct 1 quite widely in northeast England, East Anglia and the Midlands, and a few scattered places elsewhere. In Luton July 13 was slightly warmer. Nationally (and I include the Channel Is here merely because that has always been the convention) the highest was 30.6°C at St Helier on July 13, followed by 30.5°C at Mepal (Cambs) on Sept 12 although I'm a bit suspicious of this one. In 1965 both October and March featured in the list of individual stations! Philip Eden |

At Cwm Dyli (Snowdonia) and Spadeadam (Cumbria) it was jointly Oct 5 and another date. As far as I can determine, Mar 29 and Oct 5 are the earliest and latest dates for this particular record, at least in England and Wales. Philip Eden |

Was the summer of 1965 particularly E/NE dominated so the east coast always caught the cool weather? I find it difficult to believe that in the 3 summer months 22C (72F) was never attained at Bridlington. In high summer practically any reasonable westerly flow, assuming some sun should give at least the low 20's on the east coast. I'm not doubting your sources, just find it amazing ![]() Col -- Bolton, Lancashire. 160m asl. http://www.reddwarfer.btinternet.co.uk http://www.reddwarfer.btinternet.co....rPictures.html |

There were three notable warm spells, one in March, one in May, and one in October. Without checking the figures in detail, I suspect the sea-breeze operated at Bridlington during the May spell, but the westerly flow was just strong enough in March to override any sea-breeze effects. The national max that year, 85°F from memory, occurred in London in mid-May and this is the earliest date in the year that the national 'high' has happened. In Luton, my highest maxes for each month we March 23, April 19, May 27, June 23, July 22, August 24, September 20 and October 22. Philip Eden |

In a sheltered suburban garden in Bradford my non-standard Six's max./min. thermometer reached 77°F (25°C) on that day. In June 1965 the highest max. was 72°F (22°C). The Yorkshire coast is notorious for particularly cool sea breezes when conditions are right. Colin Youngs Brussels |

I well remember recording 24.8°C on 1/10/85, over 3°C higher than any other October reading in 23 years, but here at least it was in no danger of being the highest of the year. -- Paul Hyett, Cheltenham |

On the south coast on the same day I think it was mostly about 7°C. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |
