writes By the 13th, the easterly flow was becoming colder drawing in unusually cold Arctic air for the time of year from Scandinavia across the UK. Snow was reported falling widely and the intensity of the falls increased on the 15th as the air became increasingly cold and at this stage the snow was dry with maxima of 0C recorded in many areas and there was snow cover, the North Downs recorded several inches. Severe frosts were recorded in parts of Scotland, where minima as low as -10C was recorded. Although the intensity of the cold lessened after the 16th, it wasn't until the 22nd that it became noticeably milder as a low pushed up to the west of Ireland allowing a SWly flow across the UK. Well Gavin, I have looked up the data for this so called cold snap, and it seems to have passed us by in the Midlands! Here are the max/min values (F): Maximum Minimum 13th 43.0 33.2 14th 41.0 30.0 15th 47.0 32.1 16th 41.2 33.0 17th 41.0 36.0 18th 41.0 36.0 19th 42 37 20th 47.5 33 21st 54 36 22nd 55.9 46 The local council rain the weather station then, so I can't vouch for the accuracy! Incidentally, the records note that the sunshine recorder was stolen that month! Cold though, it wasn't!! -- Steve Jackson Bablake Weather Station Coventry www.nelink.co.uk/users/bws |

Not exceptionally so, perhaps, but 41F (5C) is still pretty low for a maximum in mid April. -- John Hall "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."
