Default Thunderstorms - what causes them to activate/die down so fast?

Just from looking at the excellent Live Lightning Data from
www.ukstorms.com I can't help but notice that the more active storms
tend to start generating lightning of of a sudden, reach maximum
intensity really fast, then just as quickly practically cease to
produce lightning.

Why is this?

Why the apparent sudden activation and de-activation?

Thunderstorms are most electrically active at the stage of when the top of
the cell has just turned into ice to the point when the downdraught takes
over, at this stagethe thunderstorm cell is considered to be "post mature"
and is reaching the end of its life.
