Anyone got one, or similar weather station?

I want to get a weather station that measures rain fall, wind speed and
direction, temperature, sunlight hours, humidity and makes its own
forecasts.

What stations do that? the Vantage pro plus?

Stuart

I just bought the Vantage Pro and am currently testing it out (as you
can probably tell from my signature!). The Plus version comes with solar
radiation and UV sensors (which add another £400-or-so to the price).

Stuart,

I have just installed one at West Cheshire College complete with a solar powered Daytime Aspirated Shield. You will need the
Vantage Pro Plus if you want to record sunshine, however, solar radiation is not recorded in hours but in W/m^2. UV index data is
also recorded. Have a look at our website from the link below and then the 12 links under Chester Weather. The first 4 links are
screen grabs of the Weatherlink screens and the rest display various graphs and data that Weatherlink sends to the server.
Evapotranspiration is another parameter the Pro Plus records. This is the amount of moisture leaving the ground in mm calculated
from temp, humidity, windspeed and solar radiation data.
The Vantage systems are available in wireless or cable versions. The good thing about the wireless system is that you can add
additional temp sensors to the Integrated Sensor Suite(ISS)
We have had no problems with the new kit although we are still running the Weather Monitor II along side it for comparison. This
will be taken out of service shortly and the plan is to install the WMII at our Ellesmere Port campus on the Wirral hopefully
before December 2004. The data from this will also be available on the net in the same format as our Chester station but without
the Solar and UV readings.
There are a number of weather stations available now from different manufacturers but I can only comment on the Davis stations.
The Weather Monitor II has been running for 7 years with not one problem and the new Vantage Pro Plus is ok so far. Hope this
helps.

Rob

Is there not a level of W/m^2 above which the sun is deemed to be
shining? If so getting hours is a number crunching job from the logs.

I can't trace the exact reference right now but IIRC there is a WMO
reference to a level of around 120W/m^2, which is deeemed to be the
threshold for bright sunshine, but strictly this is (again IIRC)
direct irradiance rather than the more commonly measured global
figure.

The problem is that while this threshold can certainly be used to
calculate a notional sunshine hours value (and indeed some of the AWS
software does possess such a feature), the result is only a very rough
approximation to what a Campbell-Stokes recorder might measure, for
all sort of reasons, and so has limited value. A more sophisticated
algorithm for the conversion than a simple threshold for global
irradiance is needed and even then there's only qualified
comparability with CS data.

Thanks for your replys everyone!

I will have to see what my budget can manage i think! I may start off with
the pro, then upgrade to the plus later on, looks like i can do that!
Thanks for all the info Rob, Scott and keith.
