Brief Comments on the Climate Statistics for Coventry during July 2003

Temperature

After the warmest June on record last month, July 2003 has become the
second summer month of 2003 with above average temperatures (+0.9C) in
Coventry.

With an average monthly temperature of 17.9C, this has been the warmest
July in the city since 1999 (18.0C), and it ranks 19th in a continuous
composite weather record for Coventry dating back to 1892.

Only 6 July months have been warmer in this region since the hot summer
of 1976 - these are namely 1983, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1999.

Noteworthy days would include:

· 15th This was the hottest July day in Coventry (30.9C) since
1996
Only 6 July days have been warmer than this since 1949.

· 28th This was the coldest night of the month though
temperatures
only fell as low as 9.9C, the highest such value since 1991
(10.3C).

Rainfall

Early July was noticeably dry with just 2.8mm of rain falling in
the first 15 days. As the weather turned more unsettled however in the
last 2 weeks of the month, 93% of the monthly rainfall total of 41.8mm
fell in this period.

The monthly rainfall total was 16% below the 30-year
climatological normal for the city, making this the driest July in the
region since 2000 (32.6mm).

· 25th The wettest day of the month registered just 7.8mm of
rain -
this was the lowest such total since 1987 (5.8mm).

Sunshine

With a monthly sunshine total of just 183.2 hours, it has been a
somewhat disappointing month with the 8% less sunshine recorded than the
30-year average for Coventry.

Although the month was duller than 2002 (186.0hr), it was sunnier than
2001 (173.5hr).

Looking at the record books, we find that four out of the past five July
months in Coventry have recorded below average sunshine
