Default Haze, mist and pollution

I note many stations are reporting either haze or mist at present -
associated with a polluted atmosphere and the south to south east wind
presumably. There is also evidence of desert dust in the atmosphere as the
SKIRON (Uni of Athens) site suggests

... today here hasn't been too bad, but certainly the past couple of days
have been fairly hazy, at least until early afternoon when surface
temperatures have been high enough for mixing through a deeper layer. My
wife (who is an asthmatic), has noticed breathing problems over these
two days.

I live on the Suffolk coast, and the night before last the air was thick
with oil refinery fumes coming straight from Rotterdam and thereabouts.
It sticks in the back of your throat - v unpleasant.

I've had a look at yesterday's MODIS images and the pollution coming across
the North Sea from the east and south east is fairly clear to see. This
image is just over 400KB and is a cropped and enhanced version of the
original.
