Just to give a comparison with the exceptionally mild weather we are
having at the moment. The first half of Sheffield was very cold and
exceptionally snowy in the east.

Repost

In February 1991 I was living in Leeds and wintnessed the coldest and
snowiest spell for several years. Since then it's not been match
either. The 4th February 1991 was the start of this.

A high of 1050mb centred between Sweden and Norway with ridges towards
Russia and the UK. Another ridge from the Azores lays to the west of
the UK. A complex system of 970mb and 990mb lows holds over Greenland
and pressure is relatively low in southeast Europe.

In Leeds the wind started to come in from the east making it feel cold
as even in the sunshine. The 850mb temps are below -5 over much of the
UK away from the southwest. A cold pool is moving south through
central Europe with temps of below -20. 850mb temps in the centre of
the Scandinavian high are above -5.
