Default Thunderstorm activity and rainfall

Hi all,

Now I have been sitting here at my PC reading about all of this thundery
activity.

Here in Tilehurst so far this year, we have had the miserable total of seven
thunderstorms,
and none of those have been particularly of note.

Rainfall for this month so far totals just 13.7mm.

So, please can you arrange for some of us lurking in this part of the
country to have some
significant rain and maybe a decent thunderstorm or two.

Regards,

Eric Belton

Count yourself lucky Eric! On the Chiltern Hills just north of High Wycombe, all
we've had so far this year is about 6 rumbles in a 10-minute passing shower one
Sunday afternoon about 2 months ago! Not one rumble or flash since!

Aagh! Every time I learn something new... it pushes something old out of my brain!

Even worse here in North Bucks I have not seen one!

Cheers

What a poetic description - wervel wind (is it pronounced "vair-ful vint"
as it would be in High German?)

Yes, it's a bit like that, JP :-)). Indeed: poetry!!

A synonym is "wind-hoos" -- dry brother of the "water-hoos".

(water-spout).
Does "hoos" mean trousers or hose (High German "Hosen as in
"Lederhosen"?).

Oh, my etymology is very poor, but I suppose you are right ;-). Colin will
know far more better!
But the word "hoos (du)" certainly indicates "covering" -- "hoes (du)" is a
"cover (eng)".
So "hozen (german)" are trousers - to cover your legs. ("Broek" in Dutch
btw- to make things easy ;-) ) Now the "waterhoos" is a funnelcloud which
sucks water -- covering it up.

I quite like the wind-trouser or water-trouser descriptions - lends
itself to some schoolboy humour, at least for those with schoolboy
minds (like me).

My etymological dictionary states that the word 'hoos' for 'whirlwind'
was known in 1610 already, the hoos resembling a trouser-leg or a
stocking.

In Friesland in the north of The Netherlands a stocking is called a
'hoas'( by Frisian speaking persons).
