Today here was almost a replica of yesterday - clear blue sky and unbroken sunshine from the word go, with another frosty start and again very dry air and calm conditions, though the day max temp was somewhat cooler - perhaps 2c down on yesterday. This evening a slight easterly breeze has set in and it is now feeling colder. So whereas yesterday we were almost 1c cooler than you, today we have been at least 5c warmer. Peter Nockles Didsbury south Manchester M20 Indeed. Satellite imagery showed that the western edge of the fog/low cloud was just to the west of here all day yesterday. We got a couple of very brief, fleeting glimses of the sun but that was it. The sunshine recorder clocked up 0.02 hours of sunshine i.e about 1 minute. Max temp was only 4.8C. Today (Tuesday) we are once again in the fog but the satellite imagery is showing clear skies very close to the NW and extending all the way to Stockport and Manchester. I should think there's warm sunshine less than 5 miles from here but, for now (09:55 a.m.) the fog is thickening again and the temp is +0.2C. Such localised detail is unforecastable and, even if it was forecastable, radio and TV forecasters don't get enough time to produce other than very broad brush forecasting. This morning I heard the Radio4 forecaster saying that there would be 'sunshine in places'. I live in a 'place', does that mean we should have sunshine? That's said somewhat tongue in cheek, but that phrase, 'in places', is of no value whatsoever in a forecast. It's a great pity that more people don't use satellite and radar imagery for DIY nowcasting. It's much more reliable than anything on radio, TV or smartphones. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. https://peakdistrictweather.org Twitter: @TideswellWeathr |

With low stratus we get little local warning of the cloud clearance. Here, yesterday the cloud lifted at 1145am. Right now, there's no sign of any brightening compared with an hour or so ago, but Meteosat shows that sunshine is breaking through in Sussex right now, much as it did yesterday.. I'd have no idea otherwise. There is something reassuring about a 'textbook' spring easterly with stratus lapping up to the mountains - good to see the tops of the Black Mountains and the Mendip Hills appearing above the murk. Forecasters really should say 'sunny in the west, dull again in central and some eastern areas' at least - but then you have the situation that Deal will have more sunshine than Herefordshire and Somerset. Several times recently the presenter of the R4 PM programme, Evan Davis, has handed over to the weather forecaster admitting that there was only one minute left for the national weather forecast. You cannot postpone the hourly time signal but you can control programme content! Julian Molesey, Surrey |
