Here is an image from Eumetsat's MetopB satellite passing over the Cape
Verde Islands at 1050z today. It shows an extensive and thick outbreak of Saharan dust over the Atlantic, and interesting effects caused by the islands can be seen. These include upwind accumulation of dust as the airflow is slowed and deflected, and downwind lee effects including Von Karman vortices. The visibility at the 3 CV stations reporting at 1200z was 800m. Surface wind direction NE 15 to 20kt. Note too, that visibility at Dakar and other stations in Senegal is only 200m in dust haze. http://www.woksat.info/etcadb17/adb17-1050-e-cv.html -- Bernard Burton Weather data and satellite images at: www.woksat.info/wwp.html |
