Default Changes to Channel Light Vessel obs

Following from the Met Office

-------------------------------------------------------------------
A new announcement has been issued as below;
The Met Office operates the Channel marine AWS station in partnership with
Trinity House, aboard its Channel Light Vessel. Trinity House have now informed
us of their intention to withdraw the platform and replace it with a Type 1
buoy in March 2021. In order to maintain continuity of observations from the
station, Observations Operations will work with Trinity House to transition
observing capability onto the new buoy, but the change in platform type means
that some compromise is expected on sensor exposure and variables available.
Visibility sensors, in particular, are likely to be impacted by the
infrastructure changes – it will be difficult to replicate real-world
conditions in pre-deployment testing, but sensors will be installed for
deployment with a process of validation required thereafter – during this time,
data will not be made available operationally unless testing proves
measurements are of sufficient quality.
The new buoy will also have a directional wave sensor on board. While we
intend to release this data operationally, Type 1 buoys are significantly
heavier than our own moored buoys and we therefore intend to deploy a Waverider
buoy alongside to compare measurements from the two during the initial
deployment period.
No other substantive issues are expected, further communications will be issued
closer to deployment of the new buoy.
We apologise for any disruption to expected service resulting from the above.
Please contact for further
information if required.
