AUGUST 2020
Unsettled, wet & dull overall. It was the 2nd dullest August on record at nearby Bosullow (records start 2011) after 120.9 hours in 2015. Dry first half (just 5.2mm of rain) very wet 2nd half. The 2nd & 3rd weeks were warm with some very muggy nights. The really interesting weather was all in the 2nd half of the month, the main points of note:- 18th/19th - Heavy overnight rain. 20th - Brief late evening thunderstorm & torrential rain. 21st – A big sea removed large amounts of sand from several beaches.. F6 westerly in Penzance. 27th - 50.4mm rain 07:00-12:00. Torrential 10:30-11:30. Radar analysis suggested even higher totals in a very narrow band just to the south. Mousehole was closed to all but emergency vehicles for a time. Trains into Penzance were suspended due to flooding on the line. TEMPERATURE (Variances from 1981-2010 norm) Maximum:- 23.8C – 7th Minimum:- 7.6C – 31st Coldest Day:- 16.9C – 29th Warmest night:-18.1C - 19th Mean Maximum:- 10.2C (-0.2) Mean Minimum:- 14.7C (1.2) Mean:- 17.5C (0.6) RAINFALL Total Rainfall:- 141.4mm – 170% Wettest Day:- 38.3mm – 27th (This is the figure from 09:00, 50.4 mm fell in the 5 hours from 07:00) Days with fog @ 09:00 – 2 (another bad month for fog affected flights to Scilly). Days with Thunder:- 2 There was no hail WIND Strongest Gust:- 35 mph – 25th There were no gales SUNSHINE at Bosullow (courtesy of Alan Blake - https://www.greatbosullow.net/ ) Total Sunshine:- 138.9 hours - 78% of the 2011-2020 average. Sunniest Day:- 11.6 hours – 31st All pretty disappointing after the quite exceptional 322.8 hours in May. SUMMER 2020 TEMPERATURE (Variances from 1981-2010 norm) Mean Maximum:- 19.3C (-0.5) Mean Minimum:- 13.5C (0.8) Mean:- 16.4C (0.2) Every summer month saw the mean maximum below normal, -0.3, -0.9, -0.2 respectively. RAINFALL Total Rainfall:- 294.6mm – 129% June & August wet, July very dry. Days with Thunder:- 2 SUNSHINE at Bosullow Total Sunshine:- 540.6 hours (Spring saw an astonishing 720.9 of sun!)
