There wasn't one, Keith. It's explained by Julian Mayes in this thread on "Weather and Climate" https://groups.google.com/forum/?fro...te/3SrULxfSowU .

The Met Office statement, as reported, is very badly phrased and so completely misleading.

Headline in The Independent with the same story is just as bad.

Note to myself: avoid media stories on the weather for the next 36 hours. Thanks Colin!

Thanks Julian & Colin for adding this, I was awaiting the barrage of Global Warming deniers flooding my inbox and telling me it was a warmer climate in the 60's. You wouldn't beleive the rubbish I have to endure!

It could be worse, your inbox could have been flooded with messages from
Global Warming alarmists. The only real surprise of this current spell
of weather is that some maladjusted thermometer badly located in an
urban heat island and subject to the wind being in from Africa might
have led to another spate of sensationalist but irrelevant outpourings.

You wouldn't beleive the rubbish I have to endure!

It is all our misfortunes the we have to endure the rubbish of the
Unprecedented Catastrophic Anthropogenic Climate Change Global Heating
Emergency Alarm system.

Me too. That Met Office tweet was very misleading.

The highest temp in 1961 anywhere in the UK was 33.9C (according to my spreadsheet). Actually quite high by the standards of the time - several of the following years stayed well below 30C (dare I say, as some here may recall). It took until 1975 for anywhere to reach this temperature in the UK after that. A few journalists might find that surprising. I hope they realise it in the MO's Nat Climate Information Centre - I applied for a job there once.....

Considering how interested the UK media (and public, presumably) are in the weather, the standard of communication of forecasts and statistics from the experts is pretty abysmal.

These “since 19xx” stories are a prime example. They should say headline it “the first time on record” and then qualify that with how far back records go. Because otherwise people will assume the record was beaten back then.
