Hi there

Random question - that I think I may have asked on here before (but can't seem to find it) - is there anywhere with historical daily weather station data - say from London Heathrow going back as far as is possible?

(Am suspecting I'll have to fork out for it...)

Cheers
Richard

OGIMET will give you hourly data for UK SYNOP sites going back to October 1999.

http://www.ogimet.com/gsynop.phtml.en

Select United Kingdom and the appropriate date, time and type of observation, and click on "send".
Click on the figure for the desired site on the map to display a list of the last 30 days' observations at that site.
Click on an individual date on the left to display the hourly readings for that date.

e.g. Heathrow for the 30 days ending today https://tinyurl.com/yam5s7qp

Hourly figures for Heathrow for today, 13th October https://tinyurl.com/ycbs6fro

Don't know if this is anything like what you are hoping for ... :-)

I'm sure there are a number around but I've not looked for some time.
This is worth a try

Hi Colin

Thanks for the detail - was actually looking for further back than 1999.

Whitaker's Almanacks since 1982 have carried daily observations from
London (Heathrow). Your local library may have back copies of them.

For 20C data and even some 19C, try the local country record office,
they sometimes get depositions of someone's records.
Also in record offices, the microfilmed local newspapers often have
daily reports, sometimes collated weekly local reports.
I suppose descending on Exeter metO library may be of use, going by the
wwww catalogue of deposits.

There is monthly data for Heathrow from 1948 on the Met Office website. Type http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/pub/data...athrowdata.txt. To get daily data, you could ask the Met Office but they will charge for it.

Hi Richard,

NCDC (or whatever it is called these days) in the USA has
hourly/half-hourly obs on-line for Heathrow from Dec 1948 to the
present day. The user interface is a bit cumbersome but the way in is
via

https://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/maps/ncei/cdo/hourly

You have to be a bit careful with this database as there are glitches
in it. One that I ame very aware of is in the wind speeds. The winds in
the database are given in m.p.h., converted from whatever units are
used in the original report. In the case of Heathrow these are in
knots. What I have found is that very occasionally, and apparently at
random, a wind speed reported in knots is taken to be in m/sec . As a
result the figure in the database (supposedly m.p.h.) is much too high.
Such spikes can be easily identified by comparing adjacent observations
but it does make me wonder about the reliability of other parameters.

Hope this helps!

Richard, you may already know that the Met Office library archive is open to
the public. MWR and DWR reports back to the 19th century can be found at:

https://digital.nmla.metoffice.gov.u...-4e4210a926e1/

Daily reports for Heathrow including synoptic reports are in the DWR
section.
