People offer don't appreciate the vast quantities of sand that can be moved around by a powerful sea.
The sand level at Sennen is high at the moment at the Cove end, though the total amount is not unusual for late Summer (it''s rather low at the bottom of the bank.) Contrast the sand level with that following a powerful swell in Dec '15 http://www.turnstone-cottage.co.uk/Sandy.html with the current, fairly typical situation, in the following 2. Almost every rock visible in the top photo is currently covered. The only real exception being the large 'Beach Rock' near the bottom of the concrete slip in the top photo. The 2 tents in the 2nd photo are where the concrete is in the top photo. The 3rd photo shows the dunes just passed the beach cafe in the top photo. Just 1 or 2 boulders shower right at the top. It doesn't stop the Council spending a good deal of money and time moving miniscule amounts of sand around as part of sea defence ideas, when 1 tide often moves vastly more. They always have to end up doing a proper job, or giving up. Graham Penzance |
