Interesting announcement from the Met Office a few minutes ago:

Rob Varley has stepped down from his role as Chief Executive of the Met
Office.
Nick Jobling, currently Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Finance
Officer, will be interim Chief Executive with immediate effect, pending
the appointment of a permanent Chief Executive in due course.
This will ensure continued leadership of our world-class National
Meteorological Service.
Met Office operations and services are wholly unaffected by this
decision.

He came down to Cornwall on holiday shortly after he took up the role. He was quoted in the local press criticising the 'overly pessimistic' (his words) 5 day forecasts for the coast in Cornwall. Apparently there was no rain during his hols, when some was forecast everyday. Unstable showery conditions, when it's all inland, I suspect.

Anyway, he was quoted as saying he would make reviewing the 5 day forecasts a priority.

No further comment!

This was on the BBC website, it's not partcularly informative.

The BBC understands that Mr Varley left following an intervention by the
most senior civil servant at the Department for Business, Energy and
Industry.

This related to concerns about issues of "governance and management
controls" at the public body, which employs about 1,500 staff.

I must say that losing the real time weather output when you most need
it is a serious error.

With any luck they'll now remove the phrase 'world class forecaster' from every single press release. Anyone else find it strange - I mean we know they are world class so why keep telling us?
