Quite unexpectedly, after no more than flurries over the last few days, awoke this morning to 3cm of light powdery snow. Sky now clear (0700) and temp -4. Very pretty.

I see that Kent saw -14 overnight over the real snowfields. Must have been the coldest night there for many a year.

I am not complaining but as far as I am aware this fall was not forecast at all. The radar shows a fairly large organised band moved in right over London in the early hours. I imagine that central London must have a good 4-5 cm of powder snow (will report later). Most unusual.

4-5 cm of powdery snow in central London and still sub zero at 1100. Lovely sunny start but now cloudy with bitter breeze and snow flurries. All very unusual

Snowing heavily in central London for the last hour. Must be 6-7 cm of powdery snow. Haven’t seen this for many years

Quite a remarkable day down here. Three separate spells of snow (early hours, mid morning and mid evening) interspersed with clear skies. 8cm of dry powdery snow now lying in central London and also here in Hampstead with temperatures not rising above zero and snowing earlier this evening at -4 with a moderate easterly breeze. Very different from the +1 deg slush we usually get.

Snowing again this morning. Brisk easterly strong enough to blow over plant pots. Temperature hovering around -3. I cannot recall weather like it in London going back decades. I’m not even sure 1987 was this bitter.

From memory, on the coldest day of the January 1987 event the max in
London was -5°. One striking feature was that it was a cloudless sunny
day.

I think it may have been even lower. I think is southern England and the
Midlands the maximum was widely around -7 or -8, and the wind was too
strong for the urban heat island effect to be too pronounced. That said,
the wind wasn't as strong as it's been today, which has contributed to
how bitter it's felt.

========

I remember that day very well. I got locked and trapped in a small porch. And it was long before the days of mobile phone assistance.

Stephen.
