Note: I'm using temperature differences above pre-industrial levels here
but they are not the same as those produced by the Met Office because the period they use for their baseline occurs long after the start of the industrial era. In theory, increased CO2 would have accounted for a 0.1 or 0.15C rise in temperature for their "pre-industrial" baseline depending on whether a sensitivity of 2 or 3 to increased CO2 is used. Also their early data appears too warm when compared with other sources. To convert the anomalies here to approximate to the Met Office and IPCC "pre-industrial era", reduce the anomaly by 0.2C. For the original GISS data, related to their 1951-80 normal, knock off a further 0.2C. GISS temperatures show this January to be the 5th warmest on record at 1.18C above pre-industrial levels. As for 12-month mean ending in January, last month's was in 3rd place at 1.29C, following after 2017 (1.38) and 2016 (1.30). The 11-year mean anomaly, centred on January 2013, is at 1.11C.
