Considering the amount of snow in many parts of the northern half of the UK, it's a shame about the lack of reports here. apart from Ken & Norman.
Wake up in Scotland. Graham Penzance - more heavy hail overnight. |

It was quite bad in the NE yesterday. A19 was closed in the morning due to a jack knifed HGV as was the A66 (but that is common after snow). The amount didn't look too bad but it arrived overnight and the gritters and snow ploughs lost control of major routes without enough traffic on them to keep lanes open. A19 was down to single lane and then they lost it. The snow was almost the perfect temperature 0C to be very slippy and local roads were treacherous most of the day. Gritting and ploughing concentrated entirely on keeping the major routes moving. The total amount wasn't much more than 6cm but the wind caused drifts and power cuts. Some places were without power (and therefore internet). It was quite pretty with fresh snow and sunny blue skies later on. There is still plenty of lying snow but most roads back to normal today. -- Regards, Martin Brown |

Well, I thought I'd made a comment or two, maybe that was elsewhere Full snow cover has persisted for past 4 days, depth modest with 8cm maximum and 6cm this morning. Tuesday pm/Wed am saw blowing snow with gusts to 38mph. Conditions much worse just south of here with level snow depths over 20cm. It's been a colder than normal month so far with 6 days of snowfall. Much drama on the nearby hill late last night with SAR helicopter and search parties checking on reports of a 'distress light'. Well intentioned false alarm apparently but I'm always surprised by the number of lights on the hills in foul weather, in the dark. Even on Tuesday evening when the snow was really bad there was a light on the hill. Perhaps it's the thrill of the challenge. From this distance it's hard to judge how widespread the really bad conditions are, so some individual reports are good. Also, posts from the frozen north are rather lacking these days, which is a shame. Graham Penzance A much more benign day down here today |
