Another day of unbroken sunshine today from dawn until dusk brings the
monthly sunshine total to 66.5 hours. This makes this month already sunnier than December 2016 (a dull 65.0 hours) but the main difference is temperature. Last year's December was much, much warmer (mean temperature of 8.3C) compared to this month's mean temperature of a rather lowly 5.4C. Though this doesn't tell the whole story, as the days haven't been that cold (helped by the sunshine), it is the plethora of nights under clear, calm conditions that have led to an unusually high amount of air and grass frosts. My sunniest December was in 2014 with 104 hours (2006 - 2016) and the average is 81 hours. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

Another day of unbroken sunshine today from dawn until dusk brings the monthly sunshine total to 66.5 hours. Meanwhile, in gloomy Brussels the sunshine total this month up to yesterday (Monday) is 4 hours 54 minutes, and there has been none today. Long-term average (1981-2010) for the whole month of December is 45 hours. Sunshine records have been kept at Brussels (Uccle) since 1887. Over that period, the dullest December was in 1934 with just 10 hours sunshine. As things are going this month, that record may be at risk ! By contrast with your figures in Devon, last December Brussels had 84.5 hours sun, but December 2014 only 38.2 hours. https://www.frankdeboosere.be/klimaa...atdecember.php Sunshine totals in the 3rd graph down (yellow bars). Individual years' figures can be seen by hovering over the graph with the mouse pointer. Colin Youngs Brussels |

'A SAD, SAD situation' As Nick says, December has been sunny and yesterday, in Dawlish, was just 'a perfect day'! |
